Beacon | Pelagic Lattice

Once abandoned, the object is reclaimed by the sea. When rediscovered, it is no longer recognised for its original purpose, but valued for what it has become.

Beacon explores the transformative power of time and the quiet dialogue between the natural and the manufactured. Rather than depicting an object simply being reclaimed by the sea, the sculpture imagines its complete reinvention. Through years of imagined marine growth, erosion and colonisation, the original form gradually loses its identity until it becomes something entirely new—a beacon shaped not by human intention, but by the patient forces of nature.
Its flowing silhouette suggests movement carved by water rather than design, while the open lattice structure evokes the slow accumulation of marine life over countless years. The sculpture no longer serves the purpose for which it was originally created. Instead, it stands as a marker of transformation, demonstrating how time can reshape discarded objects into forms of unexpected beauty and significance.
Within the Pelagic Lattice series, Beacon marks an expansion of my exploration into time as a creative force. Rather than focusing on what has been lost, the work considers what has been gained—revealing how the natural world continually rewrites the manufactured, allowing forgotten objects to emerge with an entirely new identity.
